The kitchen early in the morning.

Mornings around here have always been kind of strange. We never got that 'the whole family sitting around the breakfast table' thing. At first, my husband got up at 5 a.m. and went to work. My sons were next, getting up at 6 and leaving the house by 7 for their bus. At 7 I got up and took care of the baby.

Now the baby is in junior high school, my sons are in college, and my husband doesn't have to get up early any more. So now my son gets up first, then I get up and drive him to the train station for his train to Paris, then I go home and wake up my daughter. By 8 a.m. the housework is done, and I can sit down with a cup of coffee and blog. But at 8:50 I jump up and rush out the door to get to the gym. (Class at 9!) And that's what mornings are like here!

More morning stuff:

My daughter likes to eat a Finnish breakfast. That is: cucumbers, a slice of cheese, and a slice of ham on toast with a mug of hot chocolate. My breakfast is a handful of dates, a slice of cheese, and an orange. My husband likes a yogurt and toast, and my son loves cereal and an apple.

The French are not big breakfast eaters. Mostly they eat leftover baguette, (toasted, with jam) and hot chocolate or coffee. All French tables have a bowl of apples and small oranges called 'clementine's'.

Here's the Finnish breakfast, with the bowl of apples and clementines.

I love this! I love seeing people's kitchens and learning about their food rituals and schedules...and menus!

Thanks so much for sharing.

I like the Finnish breakfast best. :)

I'm allergic against most fruit and while I eat cereals, I don't need them to be happy.

Usually, I don't breakfast at all, but if I do, it's English or Swedish. I love breakfast bars in hotels where you can get everything.

Both pictures give me that "warm and fuzzy" feeling of comfort! I eat a small breakfast myself -- a fruit smoothie and 2 saltine crackers every morning. Then I have a wild field salad for lunch each day. Supper/dinner is the only meal that is different from day to day. I am such a creature of habit -- LOL At one time I slept late every day (unti about 10:00), but now with my work schedule, I am up at about 5:30 *sigh* It is a very good thing I love my job.

Thanks writerforhire! Sometimes I thnk I must be the most boring blogger in the worldd, and then someone says something nice and I feel much better!

I don't know what I'd do if I were allergic to fruit, Gabriele, I love them so much! I think I was a fruit bat in my last life, lol.

Thanks for the kind words, Bonita! I love a warm, 'fuzzy' kitchen, lol.

Say what??!! Dear God in heaven, woman, are you trying to make the rest of us feel like totally lazy shlumps? LOL

On a different note, I always love your beautiful photo stories, Sam--especially when they involve food. :-D Breakfast has always been my favorite meal of the day. I even love eating breakfast food for dinner.

While I've been eating a light, healthy breakfast for the past few years, I far prefer a real gut-buster meal like a mountain of French toast and sausage with butter and real maple syrup, or maybe eggs benedict. Mmmmmm!

...Dammit...now I'm sitting here trying to calculate how long it's been since I went to the gym. One thing I can tell you, it's NEVER been as early as 9 a.m.! Thanks, Sam. Thanks a lot. ;-)
